Now, the Paparika story:

We were paid by Mr.Wayne Sasser to train Pap from late May to late August to get him ready for Friendship Hill liscensed trial. We put him on our short bus and we trained him hard. We spent countless hours working with this hound that several people owned and had given up on as a legitimate trial dog. We saw his ability right off. We got him as ready as we could, as promised to Mr. Sasser. We called him at the end of August and told him he was ready. He said he was thinking about selling him. I quickly responded with "I'd love to have him; I'll spend a lot of time with him." We agreed on a price and the purchase was made (Thank you, Mr. Wayne Sasser). We took him to Friendship Hill, nine and a half hour drive, for his first trial. Paprika made it to the winner's pack and got picked up sixth. We came home and kept him on the program. His next trial was West Georgia where he came away with his first blue ribbon out of forty-one big males. His next trial was New River Valley, which I could not attend because of a funeral in my church. Jerry Gillam put him on his trailer and brought him home with 3rd out of 31. His next trial he went to Tennessee, VA, where he got his second blue ribbon out of eighteen big males. His next trial was Tukkaseegee where he came home with NBQ. Still determined, we could see his winning potential. For his next trial he went to Tar Heel and came home with his third blue ribbon out of 24 big males; he clearly was the dog of the day. At this point, we figured he needed 26 points to be a new Field Champion so we decided to go to Cohutta where we were told point blank by several people that we could not win. I said "The dog has proven he can win and we are going for the points." This trial was his finest performance of his entire record. He was outstanding and high dog in every pack he ran in. Mr. Ray Blevins and Andy Gordon, judges, put the fourth win on this hound and gave me their score sheets at the end of the day and said no dog ran finer than Paprika. There was a lot of excitement on my part as the winner's pack came toward the gallery standing on the road. Four dogs on the ground, Paprika worked a double and drove the rabbit for about sixty yards with the other three dogs in tow. We came to a drop that lasted about five seconds, Pap found it, drove it off, Ray Blevins (judge) threw up his hands and hollered "Field Trial!" He later told me that he did that all day long. He truelly has proved he can run in any format. He is a true and well deserved Field Champion and a very welcomed addition to our breeding program. He will be used to breed our Slabtown females next year. I would like to thank all the judges, the clubs, the houndsmen, competitors, and complainers for allowing me, my boys, and our hound another great honor to run dogs with you, to compete, win, lose, get picked up, and have fun with our beagles.
